Lizard Point Residency
This residency brought together 19 creative researchers and practitioners from across the world at The Lizard Lighthouse YHA during March 2019.
Jointly curated by Lumen and Mayes Creative, the residency was inspired by an incredible communications’ double anniversary in 2019, for Lizard Lighthouse (400 years) and Goonhilly Earth Station (50 years: transmission of the first lunar landings). During the residency artists undertook informed coastal walks, visited wireless and semaphore stations along the Lizard coastal path and learnt about important prehistoric sites and understanding of the earth. This immersive residency included cameraless, microscopic and fieldscope photography and chemigram workshops and will result in a touring group exhibition: Lumen Gallery, St John on Bethnal Green, London, Helston Museum of Cornish Life.
The residency was produced in partnership with the National Trust, including a walk focussing on the special communications heritage along this coastline, led by heritage expert, Rachel Holder. Carolyn Kennett, astroarchaeology/astrophysics expert shared her local astroarchaeology research and understanding of the night skies.
